Every yr the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters (MIAL) recognizes Mississippi’s
best writers, artists, and musicians by bestowing awards in resourceful fields. This
year, Jennifer Torres, professor and 3D Location Coordinator in The University of Southern
Mississippi’s (USM) Artwork and Style and design method, housed in the University of Accomplishing and Visible Arts, been given an award in the Visible Arts classification
for her piece entitled, Backyard Boats for Osage Park.
“Professor Torres is a distinguished artist whose trajectory spans an impressive variety
of achievements. Her do the job in sculpture has been exhibited close to the country and is
an inspiration for our pupils in their own work. I am honored to provide my congratulations
to Professor Torres for this prestigious award on behalf of the MIAL,” reported Dr. Chris
Winstead, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Torres and the other winners will be honored at the 43rd Anniversary Awards Gala in
Jackson, Overlook., on June 11 at the Mississippi Museum of Artwork. All nominees and winners
will be honored at a reception prior to the banquet.
“I am pretty delighted and honored to get this exceptional award,” Torres reported. “I
get the job done really hard as an artist and professor. To be so identified by these an esteemed organization
demonstrates that difficult function pays off.”
Torres also reflected on the integral job that USM played in her progress as an
artist. “Over the decades only a number of from USM have been honored and am humbled that
I have been picked out to be a part of these kinds of a honored group.”
“An award like this is also essential for the learners to see,” Torres added. “Never

The community artwork Backyard Boats, inspired by the curving traces of the paths in the park, is completely installed
at Osage Park in Bentonville, AR.
Torres started her studio instruction at the Art Pupils League in New York Town. She
went on to generate a BFA at the Cooper Union and an MFA in Sculpture from the College
of Georgia in Athens. She has worked in steel fabrication, casting, woodworking and
photography, and properly trained as a cabinetmaker in New England. She has formerly received
several awards like being picked for a extremely-competitive 2020 Mississippi
Visual Arts Fellowship and named as the Imaginative Researcher of the Year at USM’s Faculty
of Arts and Sciences.
