Responses from the “girls” on expanding up with the amusement and video games of their times long gone-by continue:
Frances, who I believe that resides in New Britain as someone two a long time more mature than I, grew up in East Haven and wrote that “We girls played with dolls, jumped rope, experienced tea get-togethers, and did all the issues boys did. We even experienced a basketball hoop in the yard, but we didn’t use it in East Haven, mainly because children in East Haven did not play basketball.
“We played hardball. We liked to bat a ball all-around the property producing up procedures as we went alongside, usually ending in heading into a neighbor’s garden to get our ball. We also did all the items that young children people times are not supposed to do, like climbing trees.
“If we got bored in the summer time our mothers and fathers would pack us a lunch and we’d go to the airport to see the planes occur in, and then go to Nathan Hale Park to cling out until eventually suppertime. That was the most exciting.”
She added that there was a fall-off working day camp in the summer months and they’d fulfill pals at the playground, and that’sw considerably like we did at both of those Site and Rockwell parks below.
There was no Tv when she was a kid, so they listened to Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Sky King on the radio.
(Notice: I recall watching Sky King on Television set, and wishing I was Sky, since his niece, Penny, was a “babe,” even though she was significantly more mature than I was.)
Dorene, who I haven’t tracked down as much as her city of home goes, wrote a lengthy e-mail and I shared section of it final week. Here’s the 2nd segment:
“We girls also spent pleasant hrs listening to 78 RPM data, which we performed on the Victrola. There had been no 45s or 33 and a third information in existence back again then, not even ‘Hi-Fidelity,’ or Tv set. At situations, we girls stayed within and performed songs on our tall black piano even though singing along with the tracks we performed.
“We ‘gals’ identified tons of matters to do. We occasionally played indoor board online games like Monopoly, or card game titles like Fish. Steal the Outdated Man’s Pack, War, or Solitaire, and so forth.
“Many days we would stroll to the library 3 miles away to get out and return textbooks. Then there were also the ‘Who Am I’ guessing game titles.
“We relished heading to the flicks, viewing all those you talked about, as well as Shirley Temple, ‘The Skinny Gentleman,’ romances, detective films and the ongoing suspense serials which would induce us back again to the theater every single Saturday out of curiosity as to how the continuous secret played out until eventually the ultimate 7 days.”
Dorene included that there had been 4-bash phone strains when she grew up:
“It was unattainable to cellphone friends, for the reason that the line was typically fast paced with people today on the other strains ‘hogging’ the time.”
There were no faculty buses to consider the youngsters to college and back again property. And inspite of the length concerning house and faculty and the cold, damp wintertime weather conditions, the course attendance was often great.
