Benedict Cumberbatch’s Netflix movie sets a new record

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Netflix movie The Power of the Dog has set a new record for the streaming service, as the psychological drama has become the Netflix movie with the most Best Picture award wins.

The Power of the Dog picked up the Best Picture award at the North Dakota Film Society Awards on January 17, giving the film its 21st win in the Best Picture category across the various film awards organisations.

As Variety reports, this makes The Power of the Dog Netflix’s most successful movie ever in that category, with the film breaking the previous record set by Alfonso Cuarón’s 2018 movie Roma, which picked up 20 Best Picture prizes.

Nominations for major awards such as the Academy Awards and BAFTAs have not yet been announced for 2022, but it is looking likely that The Power of the Dog will feature among them following its recent wider awards success.

A number of Netflix movies have performed well at major awards ceremonies over the past few years, including Mank, Marriage Story and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

The Power of the Dog stars Marvel and Sherlock actor Cumberbatch as volatile ranch owner Phil Burbank, who takes a dislike to his brother George’s (Jesse Plemons) new wife, Rose (Kirsten Dunst), and her son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

The stars of the movie have revealed that Cumberbatch took a method approach to his character, who is antagonistic to the other characters throughout much of the film, and Cumberbatch has said that he was even introduced to the crew as ‘Phil’, rather than as himself.

“[Director] Jane [Campion] would say, ‘This is Phil. You’re going to be working with Phil. Benedict is really nice but you’re going to meet him at the end of the shoot’,” he said.

“That just gave me permission to commit to this character whose behaviour is at times repugnant, and not feel apologetic or embarrassed or self-conscious about it in any way.”

The Power of the Dog is available to stream on Netflix.
